Vaulderie
The rite most
characteristic of the Sabbat, the Vaulderie is the
glue which holds the sect together. A collective
bond among equals, the Vaulderie both liberates its
participants from the enslavement of the Blood Bond
and simultaneously forges a collective sense of
loyalty and goodwill. Participation in this ritual
is what identifies a vampire as a member of the
Sabbat; those who abstain are never fully welcomed
by their peers.
The presiding priest offers a few words of spiritual
enlightenment or inspiration and cuts himself with a
ritual knife, bleeding into a specially prepared
chalice. The cup is then passed around the assembled
Cainites, in proper order of rank, and each in turn
cuts his flesh with the ritual knife and adds his
blood to the cup. Sometimes the participant may
offer a few words to the assembled, although unless
the vampire is a sect officer or priest, this is
frowned upon as an unnecessary interruption. In some
instances the priest or an assistant will carry the
knife and chalice around to each participant, while
in others the tools may be passed from person to
person (in this case the cup may be held by another
participant, or the knife may be incorporated into
the chalice itself); in some highly ritualized
instances the participants may walk to the priest to
offer their blood and receive blessing. The priest
then sanctifies the mixed blood in the chalice,
drinks, and then passes the cup to the other
participants, blessing them as they drink.
Each participant contributes one to five blood
traits to the cup (too much or too little looks
questionable so most prefer a round three). The
Ductus of a pack must contribute one trait per
packmate participating (a practice which may also be
extended to include guests taking part in a
Vaulderie hosted by her pack); for logistical
reasons, city-wide Vaulderies generally do not apply
this practice, although officers will place large
quantities of blood into the chalice in as befits
their positions of leadership. Depending on the size
of the Vaulderie group, participants may use pieces
of paper with character names on them to denote
contributed and received blood traits, or
participants may simply be assumed to increase their
Vinculum (bond) ratings by one, unless they wish to
perform tests to reduce their ratings to other
participants. Vinculum ratings range from one to
ten, on a scale which can be found on page 151 of
the MET: Sabbat Guide.
